Hotel del Coronado has been celebrating the holidays in grand tradition since 1888. It was here in 1904 that America experienced the first electrically-lit outdoor Christmas tree. Today, The Del transforms into a holiday wonderland with beachfront ice skating, the new DELights experience in the Garden Patio, lavish feasts, festive decor, and thousands of white lights adorning the historic Victorian building.
The resort’s beautiful lobby Christmas tree will be decorated to match this year’s theme, “Making Seasides Bright”. (Activities below are subject to change.)
Skating by the Sea: November 26 – January 3
Hotel del Coronado is celebrating the eleventh anniversary of Skating by the Sea, a unique Southern California experience – outdoor ice skating overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The oceanfront Windsor Lawn will be transformed into a spectacular ice rink with skating sessions offered daily from November 26 to January 3. A portion of the skating proceeds will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of San Diego. Learn more and view schedule.
DELights: November 26 – January 3
This year, The Del will be adding even more holiday magic with DELights, a glittering light show and holiday experience in the Garden Patio at the center of our iconic resort. The patio will be transformed into a winter wonderland of holiday sights, smells and sounds with a shimmering array of icy colors, dazzling snowflakes, whimsical polar bears and a stunning video mapping light show projected onto a 40’ multi-faceted tree every 30 minutes from 4pm to 9pm, daily. Holiday favorites like warm spiced nuts, house made gingerbread and cookies, mulled cider and hot cocoa will be available for purchase, along with gifts like The Del’s annual ornament for everyone on your list. This exciting new tradition is open from Thanksgiving through January 3 and is complimentary to our overnight guests, with guestroom packages with front row balconies available throughout the season. Admission for day visitors will be $25 with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of San Diego.
Holiday Festival: December 2
On Wednesday, December 2, from 4pm to 7pm, The Del will host a special event for the entire family, “Holiday Festival…A Family Celebration.” In addition to the outdoor ice rink, there will be hot cocoa and libations, a fireworks display on Del Beach, performances by Coronado school children, photo opportunities with Santa and his elves, and holiday booths with games and prizes.
Victorian Tea: December 11-12, 19-24
Take a step back in time with classic Victorian tea for the holidays. Enjoy a variety of teas, finger sandwiches and sweets with a background of beautiful music. Victorian tea is available from 11am-3pm, December 11-12 and 19-24. Ladies and gentlemen, mothers and daughters and good friends will love this charming tradition. View last year’s Victorian Tea menu. Please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions and we are happy to accommodate, such as gluten-free, nut-free, seafood-free, or vegetarian/vegan. We also have a special kids’ plate so little ones can join the grown-ups for afternoon tea.
During the holiday season at The Del, guests of all ages enjoy a variety of activities including holiday night bike tours through festive Coronado Island, story time with Mrs. Claus and Kidtopia Camp with holiday scavenger hunts. Little ones will love the “Elf Tuck-Ins” where they are visited by real elves at bedtime. And in the days leading up to Christmas, snuggle in Santa hats by a beach bonfire and roast “Jingle Roast”, which includes your private beach bonfire and s’mores made from cinnamon graham crackers, Ghirardelli mint chocolate, and marshmallows.
