Historic Veranda
When Hotel del Coronado opened in 1888, a 20-foot wide veranda surrounded the building on all sides, affording an unbroken walk of 1,800 feet around the hotel. Windows allowed the gentle ocean breezes and more than 600 chairs were placed to allow guests to enjoy the outdoors regardless of weather conditions.
Turn-of-the-century travelers believed that the combination of saltwater and sea air was uniquely therapeutic, even more so in San Diego where the days were always sunny even in the winter.
