New Dining Concept to Reinvigorate the Historic Laundry Building with Food Truck, Smoker, Local
Microbrews and Handcrafted Cocktails
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. (June 12, 2023) – Today, San Diego’s iconic Hotel del Coronado announced its latest culinary addition with Smokehouse & Bar at The Historic Laundry, set to debut in mid-July 2023. Set inside Hotel del Coronado’s historic Laundry Building dating back to 1919, the new restaurant promises a social dining experience with a lively bar atmosphere and outdoor seating area, creating an exciting new dining option to complement The Del’s top-rated culinary offerings.
Combining elements of a public smokehouse with a lively bar atmosphere, Smokehouse & Bar offers a unique and immersive dining experience serving sharable appetizers, slow-smoked meats, local veggies, and classic BBQ sides with a California twist. Menu items will be delivered from an on-site food truck and smoker, both located on the lawn outside The Laundry just off of Orange Avenue. At the historic wooden bar from the 1880s, the same time period as the original hotel, bartenders will be serving inventive prohibition-era cocktails, local microbrews and wines, making it the perfect place to stop in for a casual bite and a drink with friends or family or while staying on-property.
Smokehouse & Bar’s interior design pays homage to The Laundry’s rich history as the resort’s primary laundry facility for 99 years. The Laundry building was built in 1919 to accommodate the hotel’s growing laundry needs, and the building’s steam-powered equipment remained in operation until 2018, at one point expanding to a second location in Coronado with a fleet of five delivery trucks that became a familiar sight on Coronado.
When guests step inside the Smokehouse & Bar, they will be greeted by vintage signage from 1925, and the original brick-clad walls and polished concrete and wood floors that once housed the iconic property’s “heart of housekeeping.” The restoration of the historic building seamlessly blends historic wood and brick with remnants of the building’s past, including the original laundry conveyor system hardware from the building’s days as a working laundry and dry cleaner, which transports guests to a bygone era at The Del, adding to the allure of the dining experience.
As part of the renovation, the architecture and development team embarked on a nationwide search for a historic wooden bar to serve as a centerpiece of the Smokehouse & Bar. The search culminated in the discovery of a remarkable bar, dating back to the 1880s, sourced from the now-defunct Laurel Hotel in Pennsylvania. With its rich history, including prohibition-era raids and a haunted reputation, this wooden bar is an extraordinary addition that further enhances the unique charm of the restaurant.
In addition to the main indoor and outdoor dining areas, Smokehouse & Bar also features two private dining and entertainment spaces with large windows, aptly named the ‘Fluff ‘N Fold’ and the ‘Board Room’, which once served as the private offices for laundry staff.
